GK: The Architect of GSVMC
During the Liberation War of 1971, Dr. Zafrullah Chowdhury (1941-2023) and a group of dedicated professionals established a 480-bedded Bangladesh Field Hospital in Tripura, India, providing essential medical care to injured freedom fighters and refugees. In January 1972, in the aftermath of the Bangladesh Liberation War, the Field Hospital was moved to 132 New Eskaton Road, Dhaka. In April 1972, it was relocated to Savar and established as Gonoshasthaya Kendra (GK).
Since its establishment, GK has operated as a multi-sectoral organization focusing on health, education, women's empowerment, and social justice. Its key activities include:
• Healthcare Services: Running hospitals, mobile clinics, and rural health centers to provide affordable medical care, particularly for underprivileged communities.
• Essential Medicine Production: Establishing Gonoshasthaya Pharmaceuticals Ltd., which played a crucial role in Bangladesh's National Drug Policy.
• Medical and Public Health Education: Founding institutions like Gonoshasthaya Samaj Vittik Medical College to promote community-based medical education.
• Disaster Response & Humanitarian Aid: Providing emergency medical and relief support during national crises, including floods, cyclones, and pandemics.
• Social Development: Working on gender equality, vocational training, and microcredit programs to uplift marginalized communities.
GK continues to be a leading force in promoting accessible healthcare and social welfare in Bangladesh, emphasizing a people-centered approach to development.
GSVMC, an extension of GK's mission, embodies it's revolutionary approach by integrating medical education with grassroots healthcare, ensuring that future physicians are trained in a socially responsive and community-driven model.
